Sinus Augmentation Procedure and Benefits
The sinuses are a connected system of eight, hollow air cavities placed throughout the skull. It is not known exactly what their function is. Some people believe that they have something to do with how our voice sounds and how we process different smells. Others believe that our sinuses are responsible for helping to filter the air that we breathe. The exact size and shape of our sinuses varies and can even change over time. A very small percentage of the population, around 10%, have an extra sinus too.
When you opt for dental implants in your upper jaw, you may be unlucky enough to find that proper placement of the implant posts puts them too close to your maxillary sinus. If this is the case, your dental implant dentist may recommend that you have a procedure known as sinus augmentation.
Sinus augmentation, also known as a sinus lift, is a procedure that is designed to increase the amount of bone in the upper jaw, normally in the area between the molars and premolars on each side of your face. To do this, the sinus membranes need to be lifted – hence the name of this procedure – to make space for the new bone if a bone graft is needed, or for your dental implants to be placed.
When is a sinus augmentation procedure necessary?
As we know, sinus augmentation can be an effective procedure for patients who would like dental implants placed, but whose sinuses may be perforated by the implant post. If this happens, you could experience a range of unpleasant symptoms including:
Wheezing through the nose
By lifting the sinus away from the jaw bone, it makes it much easier and safer for your dentist to fit your dental implant.
A sinus lift is also typically recommended for patients who would like to have dental implants but are found to not have enough bone in their jaw to be able to support the implant posts. There can be a variety of reasons why a patient has insufficient bone in their jaw. Bone may have been lost due to periodontal disease or tooth loss may have caused the jaw bone to deteriorate.
Sinus augmentation procedure
There are several different techniques that can be used to lift the sinus to allow for the placement of dental implants or for new bone to be placed underneath. The most common technique involves making a small incision to expose the bone before cutting a small circle into it. This is then lifted into the sinus cavity so that the space beneath can be filled with a bone graft, either using natural bone or an artificial bone grafting material. Once the graft has been completed, the incision is closed, and the bone is left to heal. This is important as the new bone will take a number of months to permanently secure to existing bone and to continue to regenerate, strengthening the jaw. For this reason, it can be anywhere between 4 and 12 months after a sinus augmentation before dental implants can be successfully placed.
Benefits of a sinus augmentation procedure
The principle benefit of a sinus augmentation procedure is that it enables dentists to carry out a dental implant procedure. This means that patients who have a missing tooth or need an extraction can have the tooth replaced with a functional and attractive prosthetic. However, this isn’t the only advantage that can be enjoyed by patients who undergo sinus augmentation.
Other important benefits include:
Prevention of loss of teeth due to the bone graft carried out during a sinus augmentation creating further support for existing teeth.
Replacement of bone that may have been lost due to periodontal disease.
Added bone to the upper jaw can help improve the appearance of the facial structure and give the patient increased definition.
